The Corinthian Singers of Adelaide is an auditioned chamber choir. The group was formed in 1963 by the Organist and Music scholar James Govenlock. Mr Govenlock was organist at St Francis Xavier Cathedral and a tutor, lecturer and great mentor at Adelaide University.

The Corinthian Singers perform a range of musical styles with members who are from different musical backgrounds but share a common love of choral music.

The choir often perform a cappella, but have also sung with associate artists such as the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and Michael Crawford. The choir has toured overseas in Malaysia and has made recordings with the ABC, the Band of the South Australian Police and for movie soundtracks. The choir has performed specially commissioned works.

The Corinthian Singers are available for engagements, having previously sung at events at the Art Gallery of SA, for the City of Adelaide, carol singing for the Hut Street Precinct and at functions such as weddings.

The choir is based at St John's, Halifax Street Adelaide and is grateful for the support of St John's.

Director of Music

The Corinthian Singers have engaged a number of prominent choral conductors since inception by the original conductor, James Govenlock. More recent conductors include Christie Anderson, Emma Horwood, Peter Kelsall and Timothy Marks.

Our current Director of Music is Matthew Atherton. Matthew is an organist, composer, and teacher. He received organ tuition from Christa Rumsey and Dr. David Swale, and composition and arranging from Tristram Cary. Atherton was the first Organ Scholar at St Peters Cathedral, Adelaide, in 1988, and was organist at St Francis Xaviers Cathedral from 1989 -2010.

His professional career has featured many solo and ensemble performances, including engagements with the Adelaide Symphony and chamber orchestras, most of Adelaide's major choirs, along with many performances for the Adelaide Town Hall's annual organ recital series.

He has also performed on numerous cathedral organs around the United Kingdom, Paris, and in Uppsala Cathedral, Sweden. In 2011, Atherton was a guest of the Jehan Alain Association in Romainmôtier, Switzerland, performing on the restored Albert Alain organ.

As composer, Atherton has written in numerous genres for video documentaries, solo organ works, electronic works, vocal, choral, theatre works, orchestral works, and small ensemble pieces. He also has a sincere affection for Progressive Rock, Jazz, Electronic and Ambient music, and has enjoyed a parallel occupation as a keyboard player in various original and cover bands.

Long time Corinthian's member, Nicola Hardie-Campbell is our current Assistant Musical Director.

"I love to hear a choir. I love the humanity... to see the faces of real people devoting themselves to a piece of music. I like the teamwork. It makes me feel optimistic about the human race when I see them cooperating like that."
